Undergraduate Research Opportunities

There are many opportunities for undergraduate research in Geography. Students can assist faculty or graduate students in laboratory or field studies – or conduct independent research through honours or independent studies courses. Geography faculty members employ undergraduates as research assistants during the academic year and throughout the summer.  Check out the links below or if you are interested in getting research experience approach a faculty member who is working in a field that interests you (see our faculty web pages). 

For Academic Credit:

  • GEOG 396 3 credits (restricted to Faculty of Science students not majoring in Geography)
  • GEOG 490 Independent Studies 3 credits (open to B.A. and B.Sc majors)
  • GEOG 491 Honours (restricted to Geography majors)

Geography faculty also supervise research in these programs:

  • ENVR 495 Honours Research

  • INTD 490 Development Field Research

  • INTD 491 Research Project


Grants:

All have deadlines in early February each year.

  • NSERC USRA (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada undergraduate research awards) – restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.  Minimum GPA 3.3. 
  • SURA (Science Undergraduate Research Awards)available to all students. Minimum GPA 3.3.
  • FRSQ-USRA for students who are Quebec residents and interested in Health Geography, minimum GPA 3.7
  • McEntyre Undergraduate Research Award:  for students interested in Health Geography, minimum GPA 3.7.
  • Royal Canadian Geographic Society  Grants for field research costs (no salary) within Canada
